WHAT’S YOUR JEWELRY REALLY WORTH?
Ultimately what anything is worth is what someone will pay for it. When a fine jewelry or watch item is purchased through a reputable dealer, the value is determined by the price paid for that item at the time. The real value of the item is determined by the amount of wear and enjoyment the item receives over a lifetime. Quality items purchased have historically brought significant returns after the use of that item has been satisfied.
An item purchased and sold prior to its longevity being realized is likely to bring a discount from its original purchase price. The amount of the discount depends upon the following considerations: the amount paid, the market conditions for the item at the time of its offering for resale, the quality of the item (quality never goes out of style, it does, however, get redefined over time), the maker and other less defined criteria.
To determine what an item is likely to realize under current market conditions, one must know many subjective elements of the item - metal content, gem identities, and their respective grades, the maker or attributes of manufacturing and the current wholesale values for identical or similar items. The first approach to gaining this knowledge may be submitting diamonds or gemstones to universally recognized gem trade laboratories (like GIA) in order to get reports that define their characteristics. Appraisals may help satisfy fiduciary requirements or provide additional values that may assist one in determining an appropriate asking price. As a general rule, Retail Replacement Values are ONLY important when insuring jewelry. Cash Liquidation Value and Fair Market Value are much more useful in identifying resale values.
The circumstances surrounding the need for disposing of the items will also have an impact on the monies received. If the need for revenue is immediate, you are going to rely on a cash offer to determine the value. If realizing the most money possible is your goal, consignment to a dealer who has the need for such items or marketing direct to the consumer without a “middle-man” may be the best approach. There are inherent risks to the latter approaches, but with some education and preventative measures, success can be achieved. The pitfalls of selling over the Internet (eBay, Craig’s List etc…) can be the lack of proper assurances on either end, resulting in a less than rewarding experience.
We are always looking for the next wonderful jewelry or watch item for our customers and are willing to make exciting offers when we find those treasures. Our goal is to provide a professional and informative experience for the jeweler or individual who has antique, vintage or modern desirable items for sale or consignment. We are not your gold and silver scrap buyer! Our payment is immediate in US funds for the items we purchase and are paid out in 30-day billing cycles on the items sold through our Trunk Showings.
Go to your local buyers and get their best offer- and then come to us! We are VERY aggressive on items our customers are looking for and still quite generous on items that have a less defined resale market!
